Program Summaries


Manitoba Theatre for Young People – ASL Theatre Creation:
Monday & Friday, 4:30 PM – 7:30 PM from October 5th – January 22nd   

The ASL Theatre Creation program at Manitoba Theatre for Young People will provide students with the opportunity to explore theatre and playwriting, while developing skills in acting, singing and dancing. Participants will write their own play, while concentrating on finding their voice, writing scripts, and creating believable characters and situations onstage, under the guidance of a Musical Theatre Director, a Playwright, and an Acting Coach. The students will perform their play live for their family and friends at the final showcase. Students will also develop skills transferrable to the workplace such as: mutual respect, self-discipline, risk taking, creative problem solving, and effective personal communication.

Students will receive bus tickets to attend programming at MTYP located at 2 Forks Market Road; as well as a nutritious snack/meal.

Red River College: Biotechnology Training Program
Tuesday & Thursday, 4:00 p.m. to 7:30 p.m. from October 6th – January 21st 

The After School Leaders Biotechnology Training Program will provide you with hands on opportunities to explore science and biotechnology. You will do activities like DNA extraction using Strawberries, Chromatography using Skittles, Tablet Making (Aspirin Production) and will explore other fields like Fermentation, Bioprocessing, Animal Health Technology and Dental Assisting. You will be working in laboratory setting learning to follow safety procedures, using different lab instruments and you will visit different laboratories throughout Winnipeg. Besides gaining technical experience you will develop personal skills like time management, following directions and working in a group, all great additions to your resume. You will also complete the WHMIS( Workplace Hazardous Material Information System) and receive WHMIS certification.

Students will receive bus tickets to attend programming at the Red River College, Biotechnology Program located at 2055 Notre Dame Avenue; as well as a nutritious snack/meal.

Red River College – Culinary: 
Thursday & Friday, 4:00 pm – 7:30 pm from October 8th – January 22nd  

The After School Leaders Culinary Training Program will provide students with the opportunity to learn about the culinary trade and culinary arts skills. Students will learn about food sanitation and safety, basic knife skills, cooking skills and terminology, order taking and customer service. They will also learn how to cook with multiple uses for ingredients and be able to take home any extra food they prepare. They will also study for and write their Food Handler’s Certificate.

Students will receive bus tickets to attend programming at Red River College located at 504 Main Street; as well as a nutritious snack/meal.


Red River College – Graphic Novel Creation:
Thursday & Friday, 4:00 pm – 7:30 pm from October 8th – January 22nd   

The After School Leaders Graphic Novel Creation Program will provide students with the opportunity to learn how to create a digitial comic book from start to finish. Students will engage in activities in areas such as drawing techniques, creating graphic panels including text and colour, writing short stories, learning drawing and illustration techniques, and learning to use appropriate software such as Photoshop. They will also learn employability skills such as arriving on time, following directions, and working with others to achieve a goal.

Students will receive bus tickets to attend programming at Red River College located at 160 Princess Street; as well as a nutritious snack/meal.

Graffiti Art Programming – Hip Hop Studio
Monday & Wednesday, 4:00 pm – 7:30 pm from October 5th – January 22nd

The After School Leaders Hip Hop Studio will provide youth with the opportunity to creatively explore the four elements of Hip Hop. The Hip Hop Studio will provide youth with quality programming in rapping/songwriting, dj-ing, all styles dance (hip hop, breaking, house), urban/graffiti art, and film production. Youth will become confident and capable artists in each of these elements, working towards a final performance and exhibit at the finale of our program. Instructors will provide participants with background education in each of these components. Essential life skills and career development training will also be integrated into programming.

Students will receive bus tickets to attend programming at Studio 393, located at 393 Portage Avenue; as well as a nutritious snack/meal.

The WRENCH –Youth Cycle Builders:
Monday & Wednesday, 4:00 pm – 7:30 pm from October 5th – January 20th  

The Youth Cycle Builders (YCB) After School Leaders program lets you tap into your interest for bicycles and turn it into a passion. Over a series of 14 weeks YCB will provide you with training that can lead to real employment. We will cover everything from fundamental to advanced bicycle mechanics, frame painting, bicycle electronics and road ridding skills. At each workshop YCB participants will dismantle and re-build a different bicycle component system. In the process you will build a bicycle to keep for yourself, one to donate to an organization of your choosing and one to sell at the UpCycle store (you keep the money). Come check it out and by the end you will be in a position to Rethink transportation, Reduce Waste, and Repair your bike.

Students will receive bus tickets to attend programming at The WRENCH located at 1057 Logan Avenue; as well as a nutritious snack/meal.


Just TV – Cinematography and Music Creation:
Monday & Friday, 4:00 pm – 7:30 pm from October 5th – January 22nd   

Are you interested in how music, music videos, documentaries and short films are made?  Just TV is a place where you can make your own music and videos. You will use the top production equipment and incredible studios to learn the basics of music and video production such as acting, lighting, audio, camera operation, script development, writing, storyboarding, and editing.  Past participants have recorded songs, made music videos, Claymation videos, documentaries, short films and more.  Just TV is the fun place to get the experience and tools you need to get started - and (with the help of competent, fun and energetic staff) – create your very own video.

Students will receive bus tickets to attend programming at Just TV located at 185 Young Street; as well as a nutritious snack/meal.

CanU – Agri-Food Program:
Tuesday & Thursday, 4:00 pm – 7:30 pm from October 6th – February 25 th 

The CanU ASL Agri-Food Program will provide youth with the opportunity to use experiential learning to discover how food is grown and processed into safe and healthy products for human consumption. Youth will have the opportunity to explore the various components of the agri-food system and the impacts it has on our health and wellbeing. Youth will deconstruct food products and analyze the different ingredients and where and how they are all constructed. The Agri-Food Program will also provide youth with an introduction to future studies at university and its campus, career possibilities in the field of Agriculture as well as related topics such as weather, economics and politics.

** Only students in Grade 8 or Grade 9 can participate in this program.

Students will receive bus tickets to attend programming at University of Manitoba by CanU, located at 426 Education Building, The University of Manitoba, 71 Curry Place; as well as a nutritious snack & dinner meal each week.
